What the authors reported
After an ozone infusion (her blood drawn, ozone gas injected into it, and the blood transfused back intravenously), a 50-year-old woman had syncope. Her first electrocardiogram showed no infarction or ischemia, but troponin I was elevated and rising; she was admitted with a non-ST elevation myocardial infarction, which the authors associate with oxidative myocardial stress from ozone.
What limits this result
Single case report, read from the abstract only. The abstract gives no ozone concentration, gas or blood volume, or findings of the cardiac evaluation, and it shows the event followed this procedure, not how often it occurs.
Harms reported after ozone therapy, and studies of how ozone exposure affects health. One study rarely settles a medical question; our guides weigh each paper against the rest of the evidence.

What it measured
- Presentation
- Syncope after completion of ozone infusion therapy
A 50-year-old white woman presented after experiencing syncope after completion of ozone infusion therapy.
- Initial electrocardiogram and troponin I
- No signs of infarction or ischemia on the electrocardiogram; initial troponin I elevated and continued to rise
- Admission
- Admitted for a non-ST elevation myocardial infarction; underwent an extensive cardiac evaluation
- Conclusion of the evaluation
- Oxidative myocardial stress secondary to ozone was associated with the non-ST elevation myocardial infarction

Safety as reported
Syncope and a non-ST elevation myocardial infarction immediately after an ozone infusionThis case notes a patient who underwent an ozone infusion who experienced syncope and a non-ST elevation myocardial infarction immediately thereafter.
